Protective Engineering Aganist Extrem Events belong to TECNALIA, a private, non-profit research organisation with more than 50 years of
experience in supporting enterprises and administration bodies in their technological
and innovation needs. The members of the foundation are around 30 enterprises
(both SMEs and large ones) representing a number of industrial and service sectors
from Spain ,
as well as regional administration bodies.
Since 1993, Protective Engineering Aganist Extrem Events department has been developing, analysing, and applying advanced calculation methods to predict the effects of blast, Impact and Fires in structures and people as well as to develop effective solutions or products. Thus, We has, first, been carrying out R&D projects in the field of fire safety engineering with the prior interest of developing new technological knowledge that favors the improvement of safety in the construction, industrial and defense environment.
The development of these R+D projects always has been carried out
considering the following three areas: evaluation of tenability conditions for
people safety, evaluation of structural integrity and the use of experimental
methods for validating safety strategies in critical scenarios.
We has skills in the use and draw of advanced
tools based on hydrocodes and multi-physic’s for the analysis, verification and
safety level optimization of critical buildings and infrastructures by means of
innovative constructive and architectoni c
designs that enable, first to dissuade the occurrence of an extreme event such
as fire and blast, and then to minimize the originated effects. Lab test are also capabilities for Fire analysis and agreements with the military department of Spain have been done for blast and impact tests.
TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS IN THE FIELD OF:
Blast and impact safety field:
· Design of explosion scenarios taking into account the existing interaction among environment-threat-human response.
· Design, verification and analysis of external layout planning of urban areas submitted to the actions originated in an explosion. Analysis of the influencing key design parameters on the behaviour of urban areas against a blast wave
· Development of methodologies for the verification and optimization of the architectural response (external and internal geometrical configuration) of critical infrastructures taking into account the typology of people normally present in the scenario.
· Development of methodologies for structural assessment against blast explosions based on numerical simulations with hydrocodes and multi-physics models and PROBIT diagrams
· Forensic engineering in the field of terrorist attacks based on real damages´ assessment. Prediction of the location and explosive characteristics in an explosion scenario.
Fire safety:
· Design of fire
scenarios taking into account the existing interaction among environment-natural
fire and human response.
·
Development of
design rules for structural systems (concrete, steel materials) subjected to
natural fires. Analysis of the influence of the passive fire protection systems
on the structural behaviour against fire conditions.
· Smoke and gas propagation
in fire scenarios and its influence on adjacent structural systems and
compartment. Tenability conditions assessment.
· Characterization of
the behaviour and influence of different passive and active fire protection
systems on a fire.
· Egress analysis in
fire scenarios as a function of the typology of people, internal lay-out and
tenability conditions.
· Experimental
validation of the building response against fire as a function of effect of the
natural fire and fire protection systems available.
